Khun Don & Khun Yai House

Inspired by Owner’s passion for travel and their deep appreciation for Japanese culture, the homeowners envisioned a residence that captures the atmosphere and character of the places they have experienced—both inside and out.

Starting from a typical two-story detached house, the design reimagines the layout and ambience to reflect the essence of modern Japanese living. Upon entry, a small transitional space is created as a genkan—a dedicated area for removing and storing shoes before stepping up into the main living spaces. The interior follows a minimal modern approach, featuring warm tones and natural wood, with an emphasis on visual connections between the inside and the outside. This allows uninterrupted views of the carefully curated Japanese garden, designed to bring a sense of calm and enjoyment to everyday life.

Along the side of the house, a traditional-style Japanese wooden pavilion was added, wrapped in charred black timber to create a striking contrast with the main white structure and to serve as a dramatic backdrop for the garden—enhancing its beauty and presence.

Inside the pavilion, a tatami-floored lounge offers a tranquil space for relaxation, garden viewing, or enjoying afternoon tea. An en-suite soaking bath allows occupants to unwind in warm water while taking in the surrounding greenery.

Every aspect of the design was approached with care—from spatial planning to the selection of materials—ensuring that the homeowners can fully appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of their living environment.
